Devotion 3 - God be with you

I wonder what it mean to "take care that God be with you" - it can't possibly refer to actual presence. Scripture promises that God will neither leave us or forsake us. God with us isn't up to us. So what could it mean?

I remembered a prayer by Richard Foster today - from his book Prayers from the Heart...

Prayer of Tears

Enter my heart, O God.
Let me see what breaks your heart.
Le my heart be broken also.

...take care that God be with you in everything you do...

could it be that he is reminding us to be mindful of God at all times, I'm aware of the tendency in myself to say: "I know God is with me all the time, so I can call on God at all tiems" but then in practice I get busy and while I know subconsciously that God is there, 'forget' consciously. Then it's almost like every now and then I suddenly wake up and realise God with me and experience that feeling of peace and warmth and humility. So could Thomas be suggesting we become mindful of God at all times and so at all times we experience God's peace, warmth and humility, not only when things fall apart and we then actively seek God?

I also like the Prayer of Tears, I seldom think of looking at what God feels and how God feels for those around me. It's liberating to be able to come to God in this way. New and fresh. Thanks for putting that as an aide to the comments.

Yes, I agree that although we know that God is ever present, it does take a conscious realization to acknowledge this - and it is humbling. I did wonder about people with low self-esteem and how they would react - would they feel 'humiliation'as opposed to 'humbleness', come down on themselves, and possibly become depressed......
